Edith lives in New York and keeps a diary. It’s the 1950s, the height of modern American life. At age twenty-five, Edith is married and believes in the beauty of her future. She wants to be an independent woman, a thoughtful woman, a free woman. A good woman. Yet by age fifty, Edith is living in the suburbs and is none of these things. Her marriage has collapsed, her husband has left her her son is a burden and her life a failure. But her diary is still at her side. The diary is her mental double, a door to a parallel universe where Edith lives. It is the lie she clings to, the invisible and indispensable MASK that gives her life structure. But can a real life spent in a false world be lived to its fullest?
